Problems with Monitors

WARNING!

It is extremely dangerous to open a monitor and repair it yourself. If you suspect that you have a faulty monitor again we stress Do Not Attempt to Repair It Yourself! Something in the region of 2400 Volts lurks in these critters and would love to give you a shocking experience. Better to pay a repairer to do the job than to end up black and crispy. You have been WARNED!

The first thing that we must first establish is that you do have a monitor problem. A few things outside the monitor can cause problems relating to your monitor. As you will see in the folowing fault diagnosis all is not so grim.

Monitor does not "power up"
Check to see that all the cables are connected and the monitor is switched on. Check to see if any lights are active on the monitor. If there is no lights on your monitor but your computer is alive then you certainly have a sick monitor and a trip to the repair shop is in order.

If you have lights active on your monitor, you could have one of three causes:

  • The problem is with the computer not the monitor.
  • The monitor's connection to the computer is damaged.
  • The monitor is faulty.
  • Unless you can check the monitor on another computer, you will have to take the whole system to a computer repairer. Of course if you can get the monitor to work (or doesn't) on another computer you will know where the cause of the problem is. Once again get a qualified technicain to repair your monitor if it is faulty.

The monitor has a red, blue or green Tinge to the screen.
Again there are a few causes. If you have moved the monitor recently, try re-positioning it again. You may have put the monitor too close to a strong EMF (Electro Magnetic Flux) source which will affect the monitor's picture.

The next thing to check would be the monitor's video lead plug which will have about 15 pins in it. If one of these pins is bent or broken, this will cause the tinge on the screen. You can try and straighten a bent pin but if it is broken it's time to take the monitor to the repairer.

If you have eliminated all the causes and it has still not fixed to problem, well you guessed it, it's time to visit the freinldy monitor repairer agian.

The monitor has an unstable image, sometimes more at the sides.
The most probable cause of this one is devices that are close to the monitor and give out small amounts of EMF.

The most likey culprit being PC speakers, move them away from your monitor. Beware shoppers, not all PC speakers are EMF shielded especialy among the cheap brands. Other devices that could present a similar problem are; Phones, both mobile and standard, answering machines, intercoms, fans, radios, clocks that use mains power, desk lamps or air conditioners.

If Remedied quick enough, no permanent damage will be done.

The monitor goes black or white after operating for sometime.
This is a sure sign of component failure. Take your monitor to a repairer.

The monitor is fine during boot up or in DOS mode but goes haywire when the computer goes into Windows (or equivalent).
You can relax a bit here, there is in most cases nothing wrong with your monitor. In most cases the problem rests with the operating systems video adaptor settings. You can call a technician or us if you don't know how to fix your settings.

If you are certain that it is not a settings problem, then suspect that you video adaptor card is faulty.
